Farewell, Summer Break

A sweet customer teared up over a cup of gelato yesterday as she told us her daughter is moving into college this week. And honestly- I held back tears as she talked about how happy she is for her daughter but also how much she'll miss her. The daily meals, check-ins and bedroom chats. The witty jokes and laughter. I've been struck by this conversation because I think this is similar to what happens every August before school starts. My kids come home each night, but though our days are full of chaos and mostly messes and nonstop snacks, they're also littered with laughter, jokes, snuggles, books, dances, walks, and so much delight. And though I'm ready for the rhythm and routine of a new school year, I'm already sad for the quiet house. Parenting is something, isn't it?  As crazy and chaotic as it might be, I'm so unbelievably grateful to get this time with my kids. (moving on as the tears start...)
